SpaceX to acquire $8 billion spectrum portfolio for mobile services

SpaceX has entered the mobile services market with an agreement to acquire an 800 MHz low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management for approximately $8 billion in cash. This acquisition is intended to bolster its Starlink Mobile service, enabling direct cellular and indoor coverage across the United States by addressing technical gaps in signal penetration through buildings.

The deal has had significant market implications. Following the announcement, major U.S. telecommunications carriers saw sharp declines in share prices, with T-Mobile dropping 13.3%, AT&T falling 9.8%, and Verizon declining 8.7%. Additionally, the Federal Communications Commission has approved SpaceX to operate 15,000 satellites for direct-to-cellular connections, exempting the company from certain terrestrial roaming requirements.

While the move strengthens SpaceX's position in the U.S., industry leaders have raised questions regarding its scalability in Europe. At the Network X event in Vienna, Vodafone's Tim Boddy noted that European regulatory environments, stricter national rules, and highly competitive, low-margin markets may present different challenges compared to the United States. Experts suggest that while satellite connectivity offers advantages for remote and emergency communications, it is unlikely to replace existing terrestrial mobile networks due to physical limitations.
