SpaceX to build $100 billion Starbase Louisiana spaceport FAST-MOVING
SpaceX has announced plans to build a massive $100 billion spaceport, dubbed Starbase Louisiana, in Vermilion Parish. The facility will occupy 125,000 acres of coastal land, much of which was previously owned by Exxon.
Designed to support the Starship rocket program, the site aims to facilitate thousands of annual launches, potentially supporting more than 30 Starship flights per day. The complex is intended to be self-sustaining, featuring on-site propellant production, power generation, vehicle processing facilities, an airport, and employee housing. It will include five launch complexes with approximately 10 launch pads.
Construction is expected to begin in 2027, with the first Starship launch targeted for 2029. The project is estimated to create 3,000 direct jobs over the next decade, with an average annual salary of approximately $92,600. Officials also anticipate the creation of over 8,000 indirect jobs.
While Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry hailed the project as a transformational economic milestone, environmental groups, including the Louisiana Bucket Brigade, have expressed concerns. They warned that the scale of the development could irrevocably alter the state’s fragile coastline and called for more transparent public processes.
