SpaceXAI data center failure disrupts ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok

A major simultaneous outage struck several of the world’s leading artificial intelligence chatbots, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok, on September 3, 2026.

The disruption lasted several hours, with Grok experiencing downtime for over three hours and Claude facing elevated error rates for nearly three hours. OpenAI also reported issues affecting ChatGPT and its Codex programming tool. While users initially faced confusion due to the simultaneous nature of the failures, SpaceXAI identified the cause as a failure at its data center located in Memphis, Tennessee.

The incident highlighted the interconnectedness of AI infrastructure. Reports indicate that Anthropic had a compute-sharing agreement with SpaceXAI, meaning the Memphis facility provided essential capacity for Claude models. Elon Musk stated that corrective measures are being implemented to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
