SpaceX targets US telecom market with Starlink Mobile
SpaceX announced that it will turn Starlink into a full‑mobile service by pairing its satellite constellation with a terrestrial network. The company bought 65 MHz of wireless spectrum from EchoStar for $19.6 billion, licences that include ground‑based rights, and plans to use those rights to build the required infrastructure. President and COO Gwynne Shotwell said the firm expects to win “quite a few” customers from the three largest US carriers – AT&T, Verizon and T‑Mobile – and cited the U.S. wireless market’s roughly $600 billion annual size. The earnings call triggered a drop of 2.2 %‑4 % in the three carriers’ shares. SpaceX also outlined a rollout schedule: next‑generation Starlink Mobile V2 satellites will launch in 2027, with a commercial service slated for the end of that year. Analysts note that success will likely require a mobile‑virtual‑network‑operator (MVNO) partnership and massive capital investment, as incumbents have amassed far more spectrum and infrastructure over three decades.
