Spain adopts new grid rules for renewables and batteries while EU urges nuclear reactor extensions

The Spanish National Commission of Markets and Competition (CNMC) approved a revision of system operation procedures that will require renewable power plants and battery storage systems to actively provide voltage control services on the mainland grid. Previously, this auxiliary service was largely supplied by thermal and hydro generators. The new rules introduce a remuneration scheme for reactive power, aiming to lower system costs and improve supply security, with estimates that a 50 MW solar park could earn between €150,000 and €200,000 annually.

Separately, the European Commission’s draft Action Plan for Electrification advises that the lifespan of existing nuclear reactors should be extended where economically viable and safety standards are met. The Commission argues that keeping current nuclear plants operating will help meet rising electricity demand, lower wholesale prices, and support the EU’s decarbonisation goals, while also promoting the development of new small modular reactor projects.
