Spain Advances Agricultural Innovation as Olive Growers Seek Faster Plant Health Approvals and Zaragoza Unveils Genetic‑
Spain's olive sector, despite leading European digital adoption, warns that new plant‑health technologies are reaching farms too slowly. Researchers note that lengthy EU authorization procedures limit the use of biocontrol agents and other innovations needed to protect olives from pests, diseases and climate stress. The European Commission’s recent Omnibus Food & Feed package aims to streamline the regulatory framework, but stakeholders say it remains unclear whether approval times will actually improve.
At the same time, the University of Zaragoza, together with the Institute Agroalimentario de Aragón, has launched the BioTechClean project. Using genetic sequencing, the programme will map hidden microorganisms in food‑processing plants, allowing targeted cleaning, reduced water and chemical use, and higher product safety. Funded by regional and EU agricultural funds, the initiative seeks to modernise hygiene standards across the Spanish food industry.
