Spain advances battery projects in Reus and Gijón

A pioneering battery‑storage complex near Reus, consisting of six 4.5‑MW plants with a total capacity of 17.91 MWh, has applied for a municipal construction licence. The project, backed by Isabel Development, represents an investment of more than €15 million and follows regional authorisations. The site, adjacent to the Bellissens sub‑station, must comply with environmental measures to protect the endangered pericote eagle and safely demolish an asbestos‑containing former industrial building.

In Gijón, Ionway has submitted a request to modify its environmental permit for the expansion of its battery‑material plant at El Musel. The first phase plans to produce 90,000 tonnes of cathode precursor material per year, with total investment estimates of €1‑1.5 billion. The company seeks to add new buildings, increase electrical capacity from 65 MW to 90 MW, and raise permissible pollutant limits, prompting detailed scrutiny from the Asturian regional authorities.
