Spain Advances Extraordinary Migrant Regularization Scheme
Spain is in the final stage of an extraordinary regularization process that aims to grant legal status, labor rights and social protection to hundreds of thousands of migrants already living and working in the country. The programme is described as one of the most significant regularizations in Spanish democratic history, with around 900,000 applications registered nationwide; roughly 65 % of applicants come from Latin America, and Colombian nationals represent about 30 % of the requests.
In the province of León, Cáritas Diocesana has filed 800 regularization dossiers, making the region one of the leading areas in Spain for processing such cases. León also recorded a sharp rise in foreign affiliates to the Social Security system, reflecting the broader impact of the policy on employment and unemployment figures.
Supporters argue the measure will pull vulnerable workers out of the informal economy, protect families, and counter the broader trend of stricter migration policies across the European Union.
