Spain advances power infrastructure: Barcelona port quay electrified and Morella‑La Plana 400 kV line approved

The Port of Barcelona board approved a contract to design, permit and build a new 25 kV medium‑voltage electric supply for the Adosado quay. The project, valued at €12.14 million (excluding VAT) and scheduled for 23.5 months, will install two independent lines from the new Port substation and the Cerdà substation, converging on a submarine connection between the Energia and Adosado docks. The work completes the electrification of the quay that will host cruise‑ship terminals and a future Baleària ferry terminal, part of the Nexigen plan that earmarks over €200 million to enable ships to shut auxiliary engines while berthed.

Red Eléctrica de España received administrative approval and a declaration of public utility for a 86.94‑km, 400 kV double‑circuit line linking the Morella and La Plana substations in Castellón. The project, with an estimated investment exceeding €60 million, is intended to reinforce supply, reduce losses, and facilitate renewable integration and regional reindustrialisation. Work is set to begin within weeks, with commissioning targeted for the end of 2028, despite local protests over environmental and safety concerns.
