A new type of cyber fraud, dubbed the "hamburger scam," has surfaced in Europe, specifically identified in Spain. This scam is particularly deceptive because it requires victims to do more than just click a malicious link or download software; it can be triggered by a simple SMS response.

According to reports brought to the Spanish National Cybersecurity Institute (INCIBE), victims receive text messages from international numbers promising free meals or gifts from well-known fast-food chains. To claim the reward, the recipient is asked to respond by typing a single letter, such as "A," "B," or "C." Upon replying, the victim's number is automatically enrolled in high-cost international SMS Premium subscription services. In one documented case, a minor's device automatically sent over 120 messages to international numbers within minutes, resulting in significant mobile billing charges.

The method exploits network setting loopholes and a lack of restrictions on international messaging. INCIBE has issued warnings advising users to contact their service providers immediately to disable all SMS Premium services and international messaging capabilities to prevent similar incidents.
