Spain allocates over €1 bn for AVE upgrades in Castilla y León, linking Galicia and Basque Country

The Spanish railway infrastructure manager Adif plans to spend more than €1 billion on high‑speed rail projects in Castilla y León during 2026. The funding will finance the construction of a double‑track access for the Madrid‑Galicia AVE line, including the refurbishment of the Padornelo tunnel between Zamora and Ourense and related viaducts, which will require a 67‑month closure of the conventional line.

Additional investment will cover the platform works for the Burgos‑Vitoria high‑speed corridor, with sections such as Ameyugo‑Manzanos, Valle de las Navas‑Piérnigas and La Puebla de Arganzón‑Iruña de Oca. Adif intends to launch six tenders before year‑end, with contracts totalling roughly €937.9 million for platform construction and €46.8 million for technical assistance. Design work for the Padornelo tunnel, commissioned for €4.17 million, is scheduled for completion before the first quarter of 2027, with construction to run from Q1 2027 to Q2 2031.
