Spain Allows 17‑Year‑Olds to Drive with Accompanied Licence

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) announced that 17‑year‑old residents will be eligible for a standard class B driving licence, provided they are accompanied by an adult who meets strict criteria: at least 24 years old, holds a class B licence for a minimum of five years, and has no serious infractions. The accompanying driver must use the same licence type and cannot be under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Spain plans to implement the measure ahead of the EU deadline of 26 November 2028 and will keep heavy‑vehicle licences (class C) excluded for minors.

Separately, the DGT clarified that Spain has no statutory upper age limit for drivers. Licence renewal after age 70 depends on medical fitness, with examinations every five years up to 65 years and every three years thereafter. Drivers over 70 are exempt from the renewal fee but must still pass the medical assessment.
