Spain and Austria meet in World Cup knockout clash

Austria coach Ralf Rangnick said his team’s priority against Spain is to limit the impact of 18‑year‑old star forward Lamine Yamal, who arrived at the tournament nursing a thigh injury after a strong club season with Barcelona. Rangnick praised Yamal’s talent, noting that “all football fans love to watch him,” but stressed the need to keep him away from the ball.

Spain are seeking their first knockout‑stage victory at a World Cup since 2008. After opening the tournament with a 0‑0 draw against Cape Verde, they recorded wins over Saudi Arabia (4‑0) and Uruguay (1‑0) in the group stage. Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz expressed confidence in the refereeing crew, saying he believes “the officials will improve in the upcoming matches.”

In the group phase, Austria defeated Jordan, lost to Argentina and drew with Algeria, finishing second in their group and earning the matchup with Spain. The upcoming Thursday night match will be crucial for both sides.
