Spain and California sign climate cooperation agreement
Spain and the state of California have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a five-year framework for climate and environmental cooperation. The agreement was signed in New York by Spain’s Minister for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, Sara Aagesen, and California Governor Gavin Newsom, during the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The strategic partnership focuses on accelerating the energy transition and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Key areas of collaboration include the deployment of renewable energy, energy storage, hydrogen, and energy efficiency. Additionally, the agreement addresses climate resilience and adaptation, specifically targeting integrated management of droughts, forest fires, heatwaves, and biodiversity.
Other technical and regulatory priorities include the decarbonization of transport, electrification, and the exchange of expertise regarding carbon markets and methane emission monitoring. The goal is to promote a just and sustainable economy while fostering inclusive climate governance and strengthening the resilience of ecosystems and communities.
