Spain and Catalonia extend judicial reinforcements in Barcelona
Spanish Minister of Justice Félix Bolaños and the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, have announced an extension of judicial reinforcements for the anti-multirecidivism plan in Barcelona. This decision follows significant improvements in judicial efficiency, including a reduction in the time required to schedule rapid trials for minor offenses from eight months to just ten days. In 2026, nearly 3,500 sentences have already been issued for multirecidivism cases, a figure comparable to the total for all of 2025.
To support the judicial system, the Ministry is launching a major call for 500 new judges, with 91 positions allocated to Catalonia this year and 90 next year to help decongest local courts. The provisional facilities at the Ciutat de la Justícia are prepared to host this training. Additionally, both the Ministry and the Generalitat are introducing new scholarships for those pursuing careers as judges, prosecutors, or legal technicians to ensure greater social plurality within the judiciary.
