Spain and EU Push Identity Document Reforms
Spanish authorities will now permit foreign residents to amend their name and gender on all foreign‑resident identity papers—including the TIE, CRUE and travel permits—following a Madrid administrative‑court ruling. The police protocol distinguishes two cases: (1) when the individual cannot change their details in their home country, the National Police must obtain a supporting report from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before updating the Central Register of Foreigners; (2) when the change has already been made abroad, a valid passport or travel document proving the amendment is sufficient.
Separately, the European Union is preparing to launch the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDI Wallet) by the end of 2027, enabling citizens to store the national ID card, driving licence and university degree on a mobile device. The system aims to simplify cross‑border transactions in banking, health and public services, though experts warn about data‑access controls and the lack of transparent audits. Early adopters are expected to be the Nordic states, Germany and Estonia, while Spain, Italy and several Eastern European members may roll it out more slowly.
