Spain and France advance green hydrogen production projects
The Spanish Institute for Energy Diversification and Savings (IDAE) approved a €50.2 million grant for the Quixotgen project in Villarrobledo, Albacete. The plant will use a 30 MW electrolyzer powered by regional solar and wind to produce an estimated 3,487 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year, supporting Spain’s industrial decarbonisation goals and its 4 GW electrolyser target for 2030.
In France, a new green‑hydrogen initiative is being developed at the confluence of the Rhône River and the Mediterranean Sea. The project will rely on wind‑ and solar‑driven electrolysis to generate hydrogen for hard‑to‑electrify heavy industry and transport, aiming to replace fossil fuels and advance the country’s energy transition.
Both projects illustrate the growing investment in renewable‑based hydrogen across Europe, leveraging local renewable resources to create low‑carbon fuel supplies for industry and transport.
