Spain and Honduras report divergent road mortality trends
Spain reported 1,775 traffic fatalities in 2025, representing a 1% decrease compared to the previous year. Despite the drop in deaths, hospitalizations for serious injuries rose by 3%, with 9,888 people requiring admission. Spain's road mortality rate of 36 deaths per million inhabitants remains below the European Union average of 43, though it trails countries like Sweden and Germany.
In Honduras, road mortality has increased, with 1,599 deaths recorded so far in 2026, surpassing the previous year's figures by 19. Authorities reported 15,730 traffic incidents. Sub-commissioner Darwin Hernández attributed the rise to driver imprudence and alcohol consumption. To date, over 300,000 traffic violations have been sanctioned, including 17,740 cases involving driving under the influence.
