Spain and Philippines sign social security agreement

Spain and the Philippines have signed an agreement to implement a social security convention aimed at strengthening protections for workers and pensioners in both nations. The agreement facilitates cooperation between social security institutions to improve welfare for Spanish and Filipino citizens.

Key provisions of the framework include the ability for eligible workers to combine insurance periods from both countries to qualify for benefits. It also establishes procedures for exporting benefits, ensuring equal treatment, and avoiding double social security contributions for temporarily assigned workers. The agreement seeks to streamline claims processing and reduce administrative requirements through improved information exchange.

To support these efforts, the Philippine Social Security System (SSS) plans to reopen its representative office at the Philippine Embassy in Madrid in September. Technical meetings between Spanish institutions, such as the National Institute of Social Security (INSS), and their Philippine counterparts are expected to follow to coordinate pension management and worker mobility.
