Spain and Portugal agricultural groups form alliance in Ciudad Real

Agricultural organizations from Spain and Portugal have strengthened their alliance to advocate for the sector's interests before European Union institutions. During the VI Iberian Agricultural and Forestry Congress held in Ciudad Real, representatives from ASAJA and the Confederation of Farmers of Portugal (CAP) met to address shared challenges including water management, production costs, and innovation.

A primary focus of the meeting was the negotiation of the future Common Agricultural Policy (PAC). Leaders Pedro Barato of ASAJA and Álvaro Mendonça of CAP called for a budget that is “certain and sufficient” to ensure the future of farmers and ranchers. They specifically demanded that funding for Mediterranean-specific productions, such as wine, fruits, and vegetables, must not be reduced.

The representatives emphasized that while the specific situations in Spain and Portugal may differ, they are very similar regarding climatic conditions and agricultural needs. This cooperation aims to present a unified front to Brussels to protect the economic stability of the Iberian Peninsula's agricultural sector.
