Spain eyes 100 million tourists as Portugal records summer travel boom

Analysts warn that reaching the projected 100 million international visitors could strain infrastructure, housing and public services, prompting calls to promote lesser‑known regions and regulate short‑term rentals.

Portugal also sees a robust summer demand. Flight bookings for the country are up 20 % and hotel searches 18 % compared with 2025, with a particularly strong 81 % rise in domestic travel. The United States accounts for the largest share of outbound bookings (about 16 %). June is identified as the key booking month, and a sizable portion of reservations remain unfilled, indicating further growth potential.

Both markets highlight a shift toward shorter, well‑planned trips, with travelers comparing options more closely and prioritising price‑quality balance. The combined Iberian tourism surge underscores the sector’s economic importance while raising concerns about sustainable capacity and infrastructure readiness.
