Spain and South Korea enhance strategic air bases for defense

(Aeronoticias) Spain operates an extensive network of air bases across the peninsula, Balearic Islands and Canary Islands that underpin its NATO commitments and regional security. Key installations include Torrejón Air Base near Madrid, hosting Eurofighter Typhoon squadrons and a major air‑defence command centre; Zaragoza, used for strategic transport, logistics and NATO exercises; Morón in Andalusia, which supports rapid‑deployment missions and hosts United States forces; Los Llanos, home to the Tactical Leadership Programme; and Gando in the Canary Islands, overseeing Atlantic surveillance.

South Korea maintains a highly modernised air‑base system designed to counter threats from the north. Principal bases are Osan, near Seoul, shared with U.S. forces; Kunsan on the west coast, operating F‑16 Fighting Falcons; Daegu in the southeast, fielding F‑15K Slam Eagle fighters; Cheongju, a hub for the newly acquired F‑35A Lightning II; and facilities supporting the domestically developed KF‑21 Boramae. These bases feature reinforced shelters, advanced radar and command facilities, enabling rapid deployment of advanced combat aircraft.

Both countries emphasise swift response capabilities, integration with allied forces and ongoing modernisation of their air‑defence assets.
