Spain defeats USWNT 2-0 in Washington friendly

Spain defeated the United States 2-0 in the first of two international friendly matches held at Audi Field in Washington, D.C. The top-ranked Spanish side secured an early advantage with goals from Patri Guijarro in the third minute and Eva Navarro in the 14th minute.

Despite the deficit, the USWNT increased pressure in the second half, recording 10 shots on target compared to Spain's three. However, Spanish goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares secured the clean sheet by saving a penalty from Lily Yohannes. The match also saw a red card for Spain's Athenea del Castillo in stoppage time following a VAR review for pulling the hair of American player Michelle Cooper.

USWNT head coach Emma Hayes noted that while the team created numerous chances, they lacked the clinical finishing required to compete with the world champions. The matches serve as vital preparation for both teams ahead of the 2027 Women's World Cup.
