Spain announces first round of aid for Doñana crop abandonment

The Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition (Miteco) has announced the first round of financial aid for producers near Doñana who agree to abandon their crops. This initiative follows a three-year agreement between central and regional administrations.

The initial phase of the program includes 66 applications covering 407 hectares, representing an investment of 28.5 million euros. While local irrigators expressed concerns that this amount is insufficient, Miteco sources stated that at least two more rounds of aid with the same funding amount will be launched once the current provisional round is finalized.

The ministry indicated that additional rounds could be enabled if necessary to accommodate all eligible producers. The application process has been noted for its complexity, requiring case-by-case analysis of documentation, including issues regarding effective property ownership. A significant portion of the applications originated from Lucena del Puerto in the province of Huelva.
