Spain launches special traffic operation for August 15 holiday

The Spanish Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has launched a special operation for the August 15 holiday weekend, forecasting approximately 5.6 million vehicle movements across the country. The period, running from Friday, August 14, through Sunday, August 16, coincides with the mid-month vacation change and various local patron saint festivals, driving high volumes of both long-distance and short-distance travel.

Significant traffic congestion and delays have already been reported in several regions. In Madrid, delays are affecting the M-40, A-2, and A-3 motorways. In Galicia, the Vigo area is experiencing heavy traffic on the AP-9, A-55, and A-52, with local incidents including a vehicle breakdown and a nearby fire complicating transit. In Cádiz, over 148,000 movements are expected, prompting reinforced surveillance.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, emphasizing the importance of seatbelt use, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and respecting speed limits. The DGT also noted that driving significantly below the speed limit can result in fines of 200 euros. Additionally, rising fuel costs are impacting travelers, with diesel and gasoline prices seeing recent increases due to geopolitical factors and changes in fiscal aid.
