Spain approves 104 million euro purchase of IRIS-T missiles
The Spanish Government has authorized a contract worth approximately 104.3 million euros to acquire IRIS-T short-range air-to-air missiles. This procurement is intended to modernize and replenish the arsenal used by the EF-18 and Eurofighter fighter jets within the Spanish Air and Space Force.
The Council of Ministers identified the maintenance of IRIS-T stocks as a “strategic priority” to ensure the operational capacity of the nation's combat fleet. The missiles, developed by the German company Diehl Defence, utilize advanced infrared imaging guidance and thrust vector control, allowing for high maneuverability and a “fire and forget” capability.
While the specific number of projectiles and the delivery schedule have not been detailed, the acquisition aims to address increasing demand for weaponry and ensure sufficient stocks for critical aerial capabilities.
