Spain approves 500 new judges and 200 prosecutors

The Spanish government, via a royal decree published in the Boletín Oficial del Estado, approved the creation of 500 new judicial posts and 200 new prosecutor posts, the largest recruitment drive for the judiciary in more than a decade.

The allocation includes 58 judge positions for the Valencian Community and 24 for the province of Alicante, with four magistrate seats in the Provincial Court of Alicante slated for December 2026 and additional instance‑court seats not to be filled until June 2027. Eight of the new prosecutor posts will be assigned to Alicante, with the rest distributed nationwide.

The measure is part of the Justice Efficiency Law, which restructures courts into multi‑judge instance tribunals, reduces the cost of creating a judicial seat from about €500,000 to €100,000, and aims to relieve backlogs that have left thousands of cases pending, especially in areas such as mortgage‑clause litigation.
