Spain approves 500 voluntary reservist positions for 2026

The Spanish government has approved the annual provision of positions within the Armed Forces for 2026, which includes up to 500 spots for voluntary reservists. While there has been public discussion regarding those born in 2008, the measure does not reinstate mandatory military service, which has been suspended since 2001.

Young people born in 2008 who have reached the age of 18 may apply for these voluntary positions if they meet the established requirements. The voluntary reservist program allows citizens to temporarily contribute their skills to the military through a commitment of availability. The initial commitment lasts for three years and involves basic military training, typically consisting of periods that do not exceed 30 days.

The 2026 planning includes various categories of entry, such as alférez, sargento, or soldier/sailor reservists. This initiative is part of a broader military structure that includes direct entry, promotion, and permanent troop and marine positions.
