Spain authorises unified electricity grid for Tenerife and La Gomera

The Spanish government has signed a ministerial order that legally authorises the interconnection of the electricity systems of Tenerife and La Gomera. The order, to be published in the official gazette, will bring the two islands onto a single grid on 1 July, allowing unified programming, dispatch, reserve management and integration of new renewable generation and storage.

The project, costing over €100 million, consists of a 66 kV, 50 MW double‑circuit submarine cable spanning more than 36 km at depths of up to 1,145 m – the deepest such link in Europe. It is expected to raise efficiency, lower generation costs and improve supply security, especially for La Gomera, which suffered a three‑day blackout in July 2023. Island President Casimiro Curbelo said the step is “decisive for the energy security of La Gomera” and will help the island “move from isolation to stability and a cleaner energy future.”
