Spain authorities investigate fraudulent municipal register registrations

Authorities in Spain are addressing a rise in fraudulent municipal register (padrón) registrations used to simulate residency. In Albacete, the City Council has reported an increase in attempts to use fraudulent documentation and irregular registrations. In response, the council is reviewing the municipal register, opening a dedicated assistance point for affected residents, and increasing cooperation with the National Police to investigate suspected use of false documents and fraudulent lease agreements.

In Algeciras, local police detected 336 cases of irregular registration within two months. A separate National Police investigation uncovered a scheme where individuals allegedly charged foreign citizens money to register them at addresses where they did not reside. These fictitious certificates were reportedly used to support applications for residence and work permits. The investigation has led to five arrests for suspected crimes of document forgery and facilitating illegal immigration.
