Spain automotive market grows as electric vehicle sales surge

The Spanish automotive market is experiencing significant growth and a shift toward electrification. In September 2026, passenger car registrations reached 93,858 units, a 10.2% increase compared to the previous year. Electric vehicles (BEV and PHEV) are gaining substantial market share, representing 34% of sales in September, a 10-percentage-point increase over the same month in 2025.

Tesla has emerged as a major player, with the Model 3 becoming the best-selling car in Spain for September, recording 2,528 units. Other notable performers include BYD, which saw an 81.9% increase in registrations, and the growth of the industrial vehicle sector, where heavy-duty trucks saw a 5.6% rise.

To support this transition, the government has implemented the Plan Auto+ program. This initiative provides up to €4,500 in aid for pure electric vehicles and includes incentives for plug-in hybrids. The program allocates €50 million specifically for self-employed professionals and companies to encourage the acquisition of electrified vehicles, with retroactive effects for purchases made since January 2026.
