Spain backs Pablo Hernández de Cos for ECB presidency

The Spanish government is actively supporting the candidacy of Pablo Hernández de Cos for the presidency of the European Central Bank (ECB). Hernández de Cos is the former governor of the Bank of Spain and currently serves as the Director General of the Bank for International Settlements (BIS).

Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's First Vice President and Minister of Economy, Commerce, and Enterprise, stated that the country has an 'excellent window of opportunity' to secure the role. He noted that while nations such as France, Italy, Portugal, and the Netherlands have previously held the ECB presidency, a Spanish representative has never occupied the position.

Cuerpo emphasized that the candidacy is supported by Spain's solid macroeconomic evolution and its central role in European policy debates. The government is working 'very actively' to promote the bid, aiming to increase Spanish influence within the ECB's Governing Council.
