Spain bans use of emergency lights to thank drivers, fines up to €80

In Spain, the Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) clarified that flashing a vehicle’s emergency lights to thank another driver is not permitted under the Reglamento General de Circulación. The practice, common among truckers and increasingly among car drivers, is considered a misuse of optical signals and carries a light‑offence fine of €80.

Psychological research from Mexico highlights that verbal or non‑verbal gratitude toward drivers – such as a hand wave or a brief flash of lights – can foster empathy, reduce anxiety and improve overall road safety. Studies suggest people who thank drivers display higher levels of cooperation and community feeling, which may indirectly lower accident risk.
