Spain beach cleaning volunteers largely missing from official statistics

A study by the Spanish Institute of Oceanography has revealed that a significant portion of beach cleaning efforts in Spain is conducted by volunteers rather than official municipal services. By analyzing social media activity on platforms such as Instagram and X, researchers identified 487 volunteer cleaning operations in 2024. Notably, 94% of these events—458 operations—did not appear in any official government records or reports.

These citizen-led initiatives involve various groups, including local associations, schools, businesses, and informal community members, who remove items such as plastic bottles, packaging, cigarette butts, and fishing nets from the coastline. The researchers estimate the annual economic value of this volunteer work to be between 1.13 and 2.86 million euros, representing approximately 0.71% to 1.80% of the total public expenditure dedicated to beach waste collection in Spain.
