Spain becomes Europe's largest market for tequila

Spain has emerged as a major market for tequila, ranking first in Europe and second globally behind the United States. According to the Tequila Regulatory Council, more than seven million litres of the spirit arrived in Spain last year, a significant increase from approximately 4.5 million litres in 2021.

Consumer habits in Spain are shifting away from traditional shots toward a more sophisticated appreciation of the drink. This trend includes an interest in small-batch producers, fermentation processes, and the history of agave growers. Major brands such as Jose Cuervo, Don Julio, Patron, and Corralejo have driven much of this volume, creating a foundation for smaller, artisanal producers to enter the market.

For some producers, the Spanish market serves as a strategic gateway to other European nations, including Portugal, Italy, Germany, and Denmark. Brands like Cascahuin already identify Spain as their second-largest export market.
