Spain begins distribution of medicinal cannabis to hospitals

Medicinal cannabis is set to become available in Spanish hospitals starting next week. Following the implementation of Royal Decree 903/2025 and the publication of the National Formulary monograph, the regulatory process has been finalized by the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS).

Curaleaf has become the first company to register two standardized decannabis preparations, CAN-1 and CAN-2, with AEMPS. These will serve as raw materials for hospital pharmacies to create specific magistral formulas. The company plans to begin distribution to an initial 50 hospitals imminently.

Access to these preparations is strictly regulated and limited to hospital pharmacies. Patients can only obtain them via a prescription from a medical specialist. The treatment is primarily indicated for patients with refractory chronic pain that does not respond to conventional therapies, along with three other specific medical indications. This controlled distribution ensures patients remain within the hospital care circuit throughout their treatment.
