Spain begins distribution of standardized medical cannabis to hospitals

Spain is set to begin the distribution of standardized medical cannabis preparations to approximately 50 public and private hospitals during the week of October 19. This development follows the implementation of Royal Decree 903/2025 and marks a significant milestone in the country's regulatory framework for medical cannabis.

Curaleaf, through its Spanish subsidiary Medalchemy, is the first company to register standardized preparations—specifically CAN-1 and CAN-2—with the Spanish Agency of Medicines and Medical Devices (AEMPS). The distribution will originate from a site in Alicante.

The Spanish model is restrictive, focusing on hospital-based administration for specific clinical situations where authorized treatments have failed or no alternatives exist. Rather than receiving raw flowers or extracts, hospitals will use these preparations to create individualized oral solutions with specific THC and CBD proportions tailored to patient needs. A broader national rollout is expected to continue through October 2026.
