Spain begins testing AI occupancy radars for VAO lanes

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has begun testing new occupancy radars designed to monitor High Occupancy Vehicle (VAO) lanes. These devices utilize artificial intelligence, license plate reading, and occupancy detection technology to ensure that only vehicles with multiple passengers use these priority lanes.

Initial testing is underway on the A-2 in Madrid, with planned expansions to VAO lanes in Seville and Malaga. The DGT aims to use this technology to reduce congestion in major cities by prioritizing carpooling. While currently in a testing phase, the DGT has confirmed that future enforcement will include fines for drivers using these lanes with only a single occupant.
