Spain braces for severe storms as AEMET warns of high winds and hail
Spain's meteorological agency AEMET has issued a warning of a drastic weather shift, forecasting strong thunderstorms, hail and intense wind gusts across central and eastern parts of the peninsula, including the Pyrenees, the Ebro valley and the Segura basin. Temperatures are expected to drop more than 6 °C along the north‑west coast, while maximums could exceed 35‑36 °C in the Ebro valley and Segura plain.
In the province of Granada, a storm on 15 June produced an unusually high concentration of lightning, with a sensor in Ogíjares recording 880 strikes within a 40 km radius. Rainfall was uneven, ranging from 2 L in some areas to 10 L in others, and the cold air aloft is expected to sustain further instability, potentially leading to additional storms before a hotter spell with temperatures around 40 °C later in the weekend.
