World Cup 2026 final in New Jersey hit by Canadian wildfire smoke and thunderstorms

Smoke from hundreds of uncontrolled Canadian wildfires has drifted south into the U.S. Northeast, causing hazardous air‑quality levels in New York, New Jersey and other major cities. Health officials urged residents, especially children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions, to limit outdoor activity and distributed N95/KN95 masks.

A line of severe thunderstorms moving through the region on Saturday is expected to push most of the haze out of the MetLife Stadium area before the World Cup final on Sunday. Meteorologists said the storm front will largely clear the air, leaving only a faint, thin smoke that should not pose a danger to spectators.

Spain’s squad cancelled its last pre‑final training session after the thunderstorm hit the New Jersey training site, while Argentina’s preparation was delayed by the same weather. FIFA said it is in close contact with local authorities to monitor conditions at the open‑air stadium. U.S. President Donald Trump blamed Canada for the smoke and threatened tariffs, a claim rejected by Canadian officials.
