Spain citrus production faces significant declines in upcoming seasons

Citrus production in Spain is facing significant declines, with major agricultural organizations forecasting low yields for the 2026/27 season. In the Murcia region, ASAJA estimates that Fino lemon production could drop by approximately 30 percent compared to the previous cycle. While this reduction may improve the supply-and-demand balance and potentially drive up profits, final results remain dependent on weather, pests, and water availability.

In Valencia, the producer association La Unió expects a total citrus harvest of approximately 2.59 million tons. Although this represents a slight increase from the previous season, it remains among the lowest yields recorded in the last 20 years. While lemon yields specifically are expected to rise by 15 percent due to the Verna variety, the sector continues to struggle with structural challenges.

Both regions report that the industry is under pressure from aging orchards, increasing pest and disease incidence, and rising production costs for energy, fertilizer, and pest control. Additionally, the loss of cultivated land continues to impact long-term harvest potential.
