Spain coach de la Fuente drops Fabián Ruiz and Gavi to suit Pedri

After Spain's goalless draw with Cape Verde in the Nations League, national team manager Luis de la Fuente announced major tactical changes. He said that midfielder Fabián Ruiz and winger Gavi are incompatible with captain Pedri, and will be left out of the next match to improve the side’s fluidity, depth and speed.

De la Fuente plans to build the midfield around Pedri, using wingers Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams to create space. The decision follows Ruiz’s recent success with Paris Saint‑Germain and his role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, but the coach believes the two players now occupy the same zones as Pedri, slowing the team's progression.
