Spain coach Luis de la Fuente previews World Cup 2026 opener against Cabo Verde

Spain’s national team selector Luis de la Fuente said the side showed a lack of freshness and precision in its opening World Cup 2026 match, which ended in a goalless draw against debutants Cabo Verde. He emphasized the need to move the ball faster and keep the team consistent with its ideas, while noting that young players Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams will get minutes but will not start the whole game.

De la Fuente also addressed rumors about midfielder Mark Cucureja’s transfer to Real Madrid, insisting the move will not affect his role in the squad. He highlighted the depth in goalkeeping, mentioning David Raya, Joan García and Unai Simón as strong options. Spain’s next group‑stage fixture will be against Saudi Arabia.
