Luis Uruñuela, Seville’s First Democratic Mayor, Dies at 89
Luis Uruñuela, the first mayor of Seville elected after Spain’s transition to democracy, died on Friday at the age of 89. He served from 21 April 1979 until 23 May 1983, when he was succeeded by Manuel del Valle. Uruñuela reached the mayoralty through a regional pact among the PCE, the Partido Socialista de Andalucía (PSA) and the PSOE, and he founded the PSA, the precursor of the later Partido Andalucista.
During his term he championed the Ley de Bases de Régimen Local, worked to protect historic buildings, and promoted the development of the former Polígono Aeropuerto, now the Sevilla Este district. He also delivered the keys of the city to Pope John Paul II on 3 November 1982. Former party colleague Alejandro Rojas‑Marcos praised Uruñuela as the best mayor Seville ever had and highlighted his role in shaping modern Andalusian politics. His body will lie in the SE‑30 funeral home for public condolences.
