Spain proposes 17.45 million euros for 5G expansion in rural areas
The Spanish Ministry for Digital Transformation and the Civil Service has proposed a provisional allocation of 17.45 million euros to Orange España and Telefónica. The funds are intended to expand 5G mobile coverage to highly rural areas that currently lack signal from any operator.
Under the ‘5G Redes muy rurales’ program, the subsidies will finance active equipment and auxiliary infrastructure across 129 sites, serving 358 eligible zones. Orange España is set to receive approximately 12.25 million euros for 72 sites, while Telefónica Móviles España has been allocated roughly 5.20 million euros for 57 sites.
Regional distribution shows Galicia receiving the highest amount at 4.83 million euros, followed by the Canary Islands (3.48 million), Castilla-La Mancha (3.38 million), and the Murcia Region (2.22 million). Other beneficiaries include Asturias, Castilla y León, and Extremadura.
