Spain considers U.S. extradition request for American donor James Chambers

The Spanish government is expected to decide soon on a United States request for the extradition of James ‘Fergie’ Chambers, an American donor currently held in Madrid. This marks the first known instance of the U.S. seeking the extradition of one of its citizens over alleged financial support for Hamas.

U.S. authorities allege that Chambers laundered $7.5 million from a U.S. account through Tunisia to support the Palestinian group Hamas. Chambers’ legal team, led by human rights lawyer Baltasar Garzón, denies these money laundering charges. They argue that his wealth is legally obtained as an heir to the Cox Communications family and that his funds have supported approximately 100 projects across 20 countries, including the Sameer project in Gaza.

The case has sparked significant political tension within Spain’s ruling coalition. Progressive parties Sumar and Podemos have voiced strong opposition to the extradition. Garzón stated that allowing the request would set an ‘alarming precedent in all of Europe’ by potentially criminalizing humanitarian aid and political protest.
