Spain: Cost of raising a child reaches 346,586 euros
A recent study by Raisin indicates that the average cost of raising a child in Spain from birth until independence has reached 346,586 euros, representing an increase of nearly 70% since 2002. During the first year of life alone, expenses are estimated at 12,053 euros, which accounts for between 38% and 45% of the average annual salary.
Gender-based differences in total costs are linked to the age of emancipation. Raising a boy costs an estimated 349,716 euros until age 30.8, while raising a girl costs approximately 343,456 euros until age 29.6. These figures reflect the delayed economic independence of Spanish youth.
According to Eurostat data, the average age for young people to leave the family home in Spain is 30.2 years, making it one of the highest in the European Union. Spain currently ranks as the fourth country in the EU with the latest youth emancipation, trailing only Croatia, Slovakia, and Greece. This is a significant increase from 2010, when Spain ranked ninth in this category.
