Spain's Arcadi España pushes for new regional financing model

Spanish Finance Minister Arcadi España is pushing for the approval of a new regional financing model, describing it as a ‘historical opportunity’ for autonomous communities. During a meeting with the Association of Valencian Entrepreneurs (AVE), España emphasized that the proposal ensures no community loses resources, noting that regions like Valencia and Murcia would see significant increases. However, the proposal faces intense political opposition from the People's Party (PP) and Junts, with critics arguing the model is arbitrary and favors political allies through discretionary fund allocation.

Economic stability remains a concern as major credit rating agencies like S&P and Fitch have declined to upgrade Spain's rating, citing political deadlock as a drag on the economy despite strong growth. This legislative impasse affects the ability to pass budgets and essential reforms.

In Ceuta, the government has announced that self-employed workers and companies affected by the migration crisis can apply for aid starting this Monday, with payments expected in early October. Self-employed individuals may receive 5,000 euros, while companies could receive between 10,000 and 150,000 euros to mitigate economic impact. Meanwhile, in the Basque Country, Lehendakari Pradales has pressured the central government to accelerate pending transfers regarding Social Security to ensure regional stability before the end of the legislative term.
