Spain Deploys LiDAR Speed Cameras Detecting Speed from 200 Metres
This summer Spain will activate a new generation of speed‑camera poles that use LiDAR laser arrays to measure a vehicle’s speed from up to 200 metres – roughly the length of two football fields. The technology creates a 3‑D image of the vehicle, allowing the system to identify the vehicle type, detect motorcycles more reliably, and operate with less interference from dust or other visual obstacles.
Traffic expert José Eugenio Naranjo said drivers have virtually no time to brake once the camera is in sight, noting that the detection range far exceeds that of typical Dutch speed cameras, which give motorists about 45–50 metres to react. The Spanish government introduced the devices to improve accuracy and reduce false readings, but the extended range means drivers must rely on speed‑limit compliance rather than sudden braking.
