Spain Discharges Last Hantavirus Patient from Cruise Outbreak

A hantavirus outbreak on the Dutch cruise ship MV Hondius led to the quarantine of 14 Spanish passengers and crew members at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid after they were evacuated from Tenerife. The ship had previously reported three deaths. Twelve of the isolated individuals tested negative and were released on 7 June, while two tested positive and were treated in a high‑level isolation unit. On 14 June the final patient recovered and was discharged home, meaning no more people remain hospitalized in Spain from the incident.

Health authorities continue to monitor the contacts in Madrid, Alicante and Barcelona, and will allow visits for those who test negative in a pending PCR test, according to the latest guidance.
